ECP declares Kulsoom Nawaz a member of Parliament despite not taking oath

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) clarified, on Thursday, that Kulsoom Nawaz remains a member of the National Assembly (NA) despite not taking an oath, Express News reported.

Responding to a letter sent by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) asking for a disqualification due to delay in Kulsoom taking oath after winning NA-120 by-elections, ECP said the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s wife has been unable to take oath due to her medical condition but is still a member of the parliament.

The ECP further explained that there was no deadline for an elected member to take an oath in the national and provincial assemblies. However, it was mandatory for MNAs to take an oath to be allowed to attend and vote in the parliament under Article 65 of the constitution.
