IHC suspends Avenfield verdict, sets Nawaz, Maryam, Safdar free

As an interim relief, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday suspended the conviction of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain (retd) Safdar in the Avenfield properties case.

A division bench comprising Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb suspended their sentence through a short verdict.

The bench ordered the release of the incarcerated members of the Sharif family against a surety of Rs500, 000 each.

This verdict came on petitions filed by Nawaz Sharif, his daughter and her spouse seeking suspension of the Avenfield verdict until a final decision on their appeals against the sentence.

Earlier, the bench reserved the verdict after the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Special prosecutor Mohammad Akram Qureshi concluded his final argument.
