iPhones to get USB-C charging ports after the European Parliament voted in favor of making the USB-C the common charging standard in the region. According to Wall Street Journal, Apple’s official has confirmed that the company will be transitioning to USB-C ports to the upcoming iPhones.
When the iPhone 7 was released in 2016, it ditched the old 30-pin charging port to use an entirely new connector called Lightning. While Apple claims that this allowed them to make the phone thinner and more durable, critics pointed out that it forced users to buy all-new cables and adapters if they wanted to charge their phone with any accessories they already had.
The new USB-C standard promised to fix this issue by providing universal compatibility, but it also wasn’t implemented on any of the iPhones that have been released since then, despite rumors that Apple was planning on including it in the upcoming 2018 models.

What is the type of charger for my iPhone
The type of charger that comes with your iPhone will depend on the model. The iPhone 8 and X, for example, use a Lightning cable. The iPhone SE, 7, and 6S use a 30-pin connector. And the 5s has a Lightning connector like the 8 and X. All models will now come with a USB-C charging cord. That’s thanks to an agreement reached by Apple and the European Commission, which is trying to get manufacturers across all industries in Europe to adopt a single universal charger as part of its goal of achieving an energy union in Europe.
(The American government is also considering legislating this change.) A move away from proprietary chargers might sound boring but it could have significant environmental benefits. For one thing, chargers are often thrown away when they can be reused or recycled. If everyone were using the same charger it would be easier to gather and recycle old electronics — instead of continuing down the current path where we’re throwing them out even though there are many ways to reuse them first.
What does this change mean for me as a consumer
This decision will make it easier for consumers to charge their iPhones using the same cables they use in their cars and at work. When Apple announced the new MacBook Pro, it also revealed that the laptop would come with a single USB-C port.
This may seem like an inconvenience, but when you take into consideration that this port can be used to transfer data between devices as well as being used to charge your device, it becomes much more appealing. What’s even better is that the company plans on releasing an adapter which will allow users to connect any of their devices with a traditional USB cable – no more dongles! The only drawback so far is that you’ll need to remember where you put your charging adapter before leaving home.
Will this negatively affect my battery life
The new charging ports will not affect battery life. In fact, the new port is said to be faster than the current one because it can transfer up to 5 gigabits of data per second. What is more, it will make the phone compatible with a wider range of devices. The downside, however, may be that all your old chargers and cables won’t work anymore. Apple said they would include an adapter in the box for use with existing chargers or cables. But many people still have their iPhone 6 or older so this may be problematic for them.
The increased voltage will also mean increased heat when charging which could decrease battery life in some instances. A study done by Chipworks found that iPhones using fast charge modes experience twice as much heat as regular charges, causing some batteries to degrade sooner than they should have under normal use cases.
Why is Apple making this switch now
Apple has finally made the decision to switch from Lightning charging cables, which it has been using since 2012, and adopt the more universal USB-C standard for its latest generation of iPhones. This change will mean that all new models of Apple’s flagship device will use a single port for both syncing data and charging. It also means that customers will have to buy an adapter in order to use their current lightning chargers or cable. The changes are not just coming for the iPhone though – as of next year, all other devices sold by Apple (iPad Pro, AirPods and Beats headphones) must be compatible with this new USB-C protocol as well.
What about other devices like iPads, iPods, and accessories
It’s unclear what Apple will do with other devices in its lineup, like the iPad and iPod, but it seems likely that they will also come equipped with the port. More importantly, the company’s accessories such as cables and wireless chargers are likely to adopt USB-C as well. That would be a smart move since there are already a number of ways for people to charge their devices via cable, such as connecting them to laptops or charging hubs.
