Punjab, Balochistan Assemblies to elect speaker, deputy speaker today

LAHORE/QUETTA (PAK TIMES): The newly elected members of Punjab and the Balochistan Assemblies to elect Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the houses today (Thursday).

The leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) Chaudhry Parvez Elahi has been nominated by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) as the coalition’s candidate for the post of Speaker Punjab Assembly and Dost Muhammad Mazari as Deputy Speaker of the house.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has nominated Chaudhry Iqbal Gujjar for the post of Speaker and Muhammad Waaris Kallu for Deputy Speaker of the Punjab Assembly.

As many as 358 newly-elected members of 17th Punjab Assembly took the oath on Wednesday by outgoing speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal.

Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) has decided to stay away from the election of Speaker and Deputy Speaker in the Punjab Assembly. Sources said that Pakistan People’s Party will neither vote for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s candidate nor for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s candidate.

On the other hand, the newly-elected members of the Balochistan’s Provincial Assembly to elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the house today as well. The session of the Balochistan Assembly is scheduled to begin at 03:00 PM today.

Abdul Quddus Bizenjo has been nominated by the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) for the post of the speaker while Sardar Babar Musakhel of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf will be the joint candidate of the alliance for the post of deputy speaker of the house.
