A family hailing from India’s state of Uttar Pradesh has called off their son’s marriage to a girl over her ‘excessive use of WhatsApp’.

The wedding was to take place on September 5, 2018.

According to a report in the Hindustan Times, the bride and her family were informed of the wedding being cancelled when they had been waiting for the groom and his family to arrive, for the ceremony to take place. They were informed of the decision over the phone.

However, these claims were refuted by the girl’s family who conveyed that the actual reason behind the wedding being called off was the demand for the dowry that had been made by the groom’s family.

They had demanded Rs6.5 million as dowry.
