World Press Freedom Day is being observed today (Thursday) with the aim to pay tribute to the journalists around the world sacrificing their lives in the line of duty.
The theme of the Day for this year is ‘Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The Rule of Law’.
The Day focuses on an enabling legal environment for press freedom and gives special attention to the role of an independent judiciary in ensuring legal guarantees for press freedom and the prosecution of crimes against journalists.
A function in connection with the day will be held in Islamabad under the auspices of UNESCO.
The day was first announced in 1993 by the United Nations General Assembly following a recommendation adopted at the 26th Session of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) General Conference in 1991.
